Art&Design

Overview

At KKFS, we integrate both national and international Art and Design standards, including the NJSLS standards, to provide a comprehensive and rigorous art education. These standards guide our curriculum and instructional practices, ensuring that students receive a well-rounded education that prepares them for future academic and professional pursuits in creative fields. By the end of high school, students should be able to demonstrate mastery of the school’s SLOs in Art & Design:

Critical Thinking

  • Analyzing visual elements, composition, and meaning in artworks.
  • Evaluating design choices for effectiveness and impact.
  • Reflecting on artistic processes to make informed revisions.

Technology

  • Using digital tools for graphic design, illustration, and animation.
  • Exploring emerging media such as 3D modeling and digital photography.
  • Practicing responsible online sharing and digital portfolio creation.

Cultural Empathy

  • Studying art from diverse cultures to understand different perspectives.
  • Creating projects inspired by global traditions, histories, and contemporary issues.
  • Engaging in dialogue about representation, identity, and equity in visual culture.

Elementary School Art

  • At KKFS, our Elementary Art program inspires creativity and imagination while introducing students to the fundamentals of visual expression. Guided by the NJSLS standards, students experiment with a variety of media and techniques as they explore color, shape, texture, and form. Through hands-on projects and exposure to diverse artistic traditions, they learn to express their ideas visually, reflect on their work, and build an early appreciation for the role of art in culture and community.

Middle School Art

  • In Middle School, students expand their artistic skills by exploring more advanced techniques, concepts, and media. Following the NJSLS standards, they engage in critical thinking through analyzing artworks, refining their craft, and experimenting with personal and cultural themes. Students reflect on the creative process, develop their own artistic voice, and learn to communicate meaning through both individual and collaborative projects. Art in Middle School fosters confidence, problem-solving, and an awareness of how visual art connects to other disciplines and to the world around them.

High School Art

  • The High School Art program offers students the opportunity to refine technical skills and develop a personal portfolio of creative work. Grounded in the NJSLS standards, students engage in advanced studio practices, art history, and critical analysis. They are encouraged to take creative risks, reflect deeply on their process, and apply their skills to produce thoughtful, innovative artworks. Opportunities such as advanced art courses and exhibitions prepare students for continued study in the arts while empowering them to explore, reflect, and apply their talents with purpose in today’s global community.
