Middle School

Learners reflecting on themselves
and the world around them.

At KKFS, our Middle School program builds upon the strong academic foundation established in the elementary years, continuing to follow the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) while preparing students for the increased independence and responsibility of high school. Guided by our school motto, Explore, Reflect, Apply, students are challenged to explore new ideas and subjects with curiosity, reflect more deeply on their learning and personal growth, and apply their knowledge and skills to meaningful, real-world contexts. Our eight Character Traits remain at the heart of instruction, helping students navigate adolescence with grit, integrity, and empathy. Through our Schoolwide Learning Outcomes (SLOs), critical thinking, communication, creativity, technology, mindfulness, and cultural empathy, students are empowered to develop the academic skills, personal values, and global awareness necessary to thrive as thoughtful and capable young leaders.

Middle School Student Stories – Lily (Grade 7)

How is KKFS different from your old school?
KKFS is a bit different from my old school. There are many differences in the community; one key difference with me is that in my old school, students weren’t really social. They were only social on social media, and they had groups that you could join, for example, K-Pop or something like that. But at KKFS, I can see that everyone groups well together, and it’s not that there are separate groups, but it’s just like they’re closer friends. Even then, everyone can go into one group if they want to. So this is very nice. Additionally, there’s a lot of diversity within the school, but in my old school, most students came from the same country. So, I think that’s one key difference. Also, I had a very different experience on my first day at KKFS compared to my old school. At my old school, on my first day, I sat next to a kid and said hi, and said that my name is Lily. But when I asked her name, she just abruptly said her name and turned and walked away. So that didn’t make me feel great. But at KKFS, a student approached me first. I mean, she first said hi, and then she showed me around the school, even though she was fairly new herself. So, I can see that this community is really special.

What do you enjoy most about the school day?
So, before, I didn’t really have a close friend. And I didn’t like school that much because it wasn’t that fun since I knew my classmates mostly studied all day. But here every day, I look forward to a new day because I can be with my friends. Especially my best friend. Being with my best friend is probably the thing that I enjoy most about the school day. Just being with all of my friends in general, talking, and just like, yeah, hanging out with them. So yeah, the community is what I like most about KKFS.

What stands out most about our school community?
The thing that stands out the most about the school is its diversity of students and teachers. When you walk through our school, you can meet students from many different places all around the world. I have teachers from New Zealand, the USA, Canada, and Ireland. In my class, I have students from the USA, Canada, Japan, Korea, Uzbekistan, and Malaysia. This is important to me so I can get to know other people from other cultures, and I can learn to appreciate everyone’s differences.

What do you enjoy most about the school day?
The things I enjoy the most about the school day are usually my Art or Music classes. When I attend these classes, especially, I feel as though they really bring me to my true self and who I really am and what I value. They kind of represent me as a person. So, that’s probably what I enjoy most about the school day.
